This website will present a library of outdoor magazines published and distributed in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. All circulated magazines were purchased from antique stores and website vendors. This collection creates a mosaic of colorful cover artwork as well as articles and discussion forums for resource conservation pioneers such as Aldo Leapold. I have carefully turned every page in these early magazines to find articles, places, locations, events and ads which will be helpful for collectors of antique guns, fishing equipment and outdoor gear. The virtual DNA of modern natural resource conservation ethics unfolds on these pages and is evident in every magazine. Today we owe the excellent fishing and hunting opportunities we enjoy to the original readers of these magazines, our Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparents. These first magazine readers were visionaries. Their support and voices helped form the present system of federal and state fishing/hunting regulations with natural and wilderness areas and game refuges.
All front “cover art” has been digitally enhanced to remove coffee stains and repair age related smudge, rips and the wear and tear multiple distributions and reading over the last 50 to 100 years. My collection started innocently enough with no goal in mind except to enjoy reading the early articles and contemplate the wonderful covers. After the first 30 magazines were purchased I realized that others might enjoy reading them as much as I did and the idea of a web-based library of digital documents was born. All of my 80+ magazines are being recorded into a digital library which will be available for reading for a very modest fee.
